But while the notion that the government could somehow control gasoline prices is appealing

Of course government can't control prices but there are easy no cost steps they could take to help lower prices.

1. One formula of gas for the entire country - not all this regional nonsense - even Gov. Brown of CA is looking to switch to winter formula early to ease shortages and prices.

2. Aggressively support exploration - Bush did that and in less than a year the speculators left the market.
