great post!

Man buys property for $1,000 and holds it for ten years, at which time he sells it for $100,000, yielding a taxable gain of $99,000.

Outstanding post! Clear, concise and accurate. This explanation is understood by most conservatives, yet liberals often fail to grasp the concept, although their super rich liberal heroes John Kerry, Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi take advantage of the shifting rates quite often.

What underlies all this is the notion Republicans like Romney don't "pay their fair share" while liberals like Obama do.

From Gietner, to Clinton, Kerry, Pelosi, Reid, Gore, Soros, cheating on taxes is the norm. So, they say one thing "we support more taxes" and do just the opposite.

And left hired a tax cheat to run the IRS!

Very thoughtful post, i-n., and obviously it was appreciated. I showed it to my wife, who is a retired CPA, and she liked it a lot. The reco is on her behalf (-g).

Regrettably, much about our public debate has deteriorated to the point when all sides, especially the "left field", often function at the level of sports fans. They want "their side" to win, even if it takes lying, manipulation and other unethical stuff.

Some years ago I went through a period when I used to get into arguments with people on line. One place I used to frequent was the English language forum on Pravda.ru. I have no idea what it looks like today, but back then it was a wide open playing field of various fools, Communists, neo-nazis, racists, anti-Semites, white supremacists - and God alone knows who else. I used to call the site "The Wild East".

Anyway, it was sort of fun for a while (zero PC and self censorship can be refreshing), but I got tired of composing posts that would never ever have a chance of getting through to anyone. Besides, they had no archives and no search function, so every post, after a while, would simply drop off the face of the earth. Hanging out here, on LB's thread, is much more fun.... :)

Right now, there is a $250,000 individual, $500,000 married couple, tax exemption on sale of personal residences.

I understand what you are saying but we disagree. In the case of the land owner he generated the revenue when he sold and as a result has profits needing to be taxed. His choice of course was not to sell and incur no tax because he also didn't pay elevated property taxes as his property elevated in price since he did not sell. This is perhaps one of the biggest tax scams on the american people that I myself benefit from aside from the corporate tax system that has GE paying a verified 6% by Fortune I believe when they tried to dispel the 0% rate by proving a whopping 6% rate. Disgusting. I'm not saying we shouldn't reign government spending in or hold it accountable but when my effective tax rate is 5.5x GE thats ridiculous.
