There is an interesting paper on ResellerNews: Blueprint for conIguring software eases BTO -- SystemSoft tool cuts loading, testing process short By Kelly Spang Boston -- Every custom-made system does not necessarily have to have a new software configuration, too. BuildManager, a new tool developed by SystemSoft Corp., will enable VARs that are shipping custom systems with the same software requirements to take a short cut in the application loading and testing process. BuildManager creates a master image of a system loaded with particular software, enabling systems integrators to capture an image of those applications, utilities and operating system. This application from Natick, Mass.-based SystemSoft will create a standard for saving software configurations and will replace many of the homegrown systems being used in build-to-order environments, said Paul Sereiko, vice president of business planning. The intent behind BuildManager, which will be available to VARs by the end of the year, is to cut down on the time and cost associated with loading software on the custom systems. As a result, SystemSoft is attempting to help VARs with the pressures of "doing configurations to create correct combinations of hardware and software," Sereiko said. Not only will VARs be able to duplicate the software configuration for other new machines as applicable, system integrators will be able to cut down on testing time because the copy will be ready to perform on other machines after the initial configuration is tested, he said. "It looks like an interesting development tool that will allow VARs to more efficiently manage the time and complexity of putting software on hard drives," said Stephen Elia, vice president of product development at Nexar Technologies Inc. "It seems like a good tool to help VARs get all the software onto the drive and eliminate conflicts between drivers or the layout of the software." With its business model built around build-to-order, Nexar, Westboro, Mass., is looking into the opportunities offered by BuildManager, though no deals have yet been reached, Elia said. BuildManager's master copy could also enable VARs to rebuild system configurations if a hard drive were to crash, Elia said. Intended to be a continually evolving product, BuildManager is able to flag any potential conflicts in the way VARs are loading software. SystemSoft already has developed a library in the BuildManager that flags possible conflicts, but new configuration issues between drivers or other software will be added to the product as VARs and systems integrators add to a master list, Sereiko said. BuildManager also will be updated for new releases of operating systems, he said. This tool will be available to VARs through a site license from SystemSoft, though company officials declined to reveal how much the license will cost. A maintenance program will be included in the license, whereby SystemSoft will provide updates or new versions of the product for the first year.
