The worker to recipient ratio for SS keeps declining. In my opinion it was a mistake from the beginning. Your dad was a wise man.
My Dad, born in 1914, quit school at the age of 14 in order to support his family after his father died. He was a roughneck in the oilfields when Roosevelt was elected and later served from 1938 to 1946 in the US Marine Corps. He got his HS diploma two years after I was born. After that he was a self-employed businessman.

He thought it was a dumb idea to trust the Russians, and dumb to create a dependent society with Social Security. As far as I know, he did not get a SS check. Mom neither.
