Because you always need more bandwidth, there's always a need for compression.

Big S-A Promise: Ops Can Cut Delivery Costs by 60% with New Platform

<Picture><Picture><Picture>

Scientific-Atlanta [SFA] made a huge pre-Western splash on Mon with word that it'll unveil a prototype for a fiber optic multiplexing platform at the show that'll result in a cost savings of 60% over traditional fiber network architectures. The vendor plans a Q2 '98 launch of its Prisma Dense Wave Division Multiplexing platform. The DWDM will let operators transmit 128 video channels over one piece of fiber, S-A says. That's eight times the 16-channel capacity of most fiber. One catch: S-A will market the DWDM platform to telcos, giving cable competitors a better chance to compete with fiber.

David, so what's your take on things right here? On the brink of the first holiday season where DVD goes mainstream, we've got CUBE downgrades and negative press....conversely, isn't it true that DVD title marketing efforts are just now making the big jump from the "trial" US cities to nationwide?

Why aren't there any press stories out about DVD going mainstream, based on initial successes?

It seems to me that the long-term CUBE investor thus far has been afforded little, if any, benefit. Vision isn't commonly rewarded, as we all know.
