There may be a 50/50 split between people who find it immoral and those who don't, but advocating a leap to make what many find immoral - to make it illegal - it turns 50/50 split into a 25/75 loss.
Like cheating on a spouse, most consider it immoral, but making it illegal is an entirely different matter.

Can some pro-life GOPers come out and say that they find abortion immoral but they not make it illegal?
When I consider all of the other immoral things that are "legal" in our culture, I guess I could say that.

But! The big one! I won't until they make it absolutely ILLEGAL to use tax money to pay for killing babies.

I think a majority of conservatives believe abortions are immoral, but have given up on trying to overturn Roe. I also think a majority of conservatives strongly oppose tax payer funded abortions, and would compromise with liberals if they would give up on that issue. But I don't think that is going to happen because (as one liberal friend told me a few weeks ago when he brought up the issue.........seriously...........I am not kidding............I'd never thought of it this way..........ever) I believe many liberals want more not less public funding because they believe in eugenics. This is never discussed in polite company, and would be a dynamite issue if some brazen politician ever brought it up. Of course it would be denied and he/she would be painted as a radical extremist for having the gall to even suggest such a thing, but I think it is a very big and real thing for liberals.
