When I read this article I realize how slow and cumbersome our intelligence apparatus is. Despite substantial sums spend developing and deploying the best technology, Alexander the Great had more timely intelligence as he crossed the alps.
I don't believe the NY Times Story. It leaves out what happened on September 12th.

The Associated Press reported Friday, for instance, that within 24 hours of the attack, the C.I.A.’s station chief in Tripoli, Libya, e-mailed headquarters that witnesses said the assault was mounted by heavily armed militants. But intelligence officials said Sunday that one report was not enough to establish the attack’s nature.

According to interviews with a half-dozen American officials, including policy makers and intelligence officials, here is a rough chronology of what happened, some details of which The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

On Sept. 13, Ms. Rice and other cabinet-level officials were told about the assessment that there had been protests at the diplomatic mission in Benghazi.

On September 12th, David Axelrod, Valerie Jarret, the President, and national security advisor Tom Donilon, met and decided how to spin a story that would engage the mainstream media for a couple of days until the story would die down.

The decided to play up the Video so that the media would have someone to chase down and they also knew that the Arab street could be counted on to demostrate and burn American flags so they decided to talk non stop about the Video. Here is Hillary at the reception for the four American dead: "We’ve seen rage and violence directed at American embassies over an awful Internet video that we had nothing to do with."

Tom Donilon then instructed to CIA to prepare a set of talking points that could be used to say that the Video was the trigger or cause of the Benghazi attack.

Obama input was that he wanted to be able to keep using his stump speech about bin Laden and that he need to catch a plane to Nevada.

“I said we’d refocus on the people who actually attacked us on 9/11, and today al Qaeda is on the run and Osama bin Laden is dead,” the president has said.

RE: how slow and cumbersome our intelligence apparatus is.

We watched the attack in real-time. Ambassador Stevens and others gave intelligence that Al Qaeda's flag was flying on government buildings months ahead of the attack. There were actual attacks prior to the 9/11 event. The intelligence could not have been more clear about what was going to happen, but the Obama administration did not like what the intelligence community and their own ambassador was telling them.
