The only thing that might permit the Fed to carry such a balance sheet will be continuing turmoil in Europe (which is increasingly likely a sure bet). Capital flight from there may find the US taking the path of Japan for the immediate future until such a time that Europe finally collapses, and turn attention to the next "domino" in the row.

I certainly hope that we don't see the kind of national debt that we're seeing in Japan. But it's also possible that, along with Europe, we may see Japan blow up as well.. forcing even more capital from the global financial periphery into the center (the US)..
