Governor Romney clearly stayed away from outright conflict with Obama. It disarmed Obama of most of his "lines" his campaign staff gave him. Obama had to stand on his own, and he did wander off script a few times.

Obama threw more red meat to his base than Governor Romney did to his. In the end Mitt Romney seemed more Presidential. Obama did not gain enough to make up for his dismal performance in the first debate and his mediocre performance in the second one.
