Journal says Midas leads dismal gold funds

Barrick Gold Corp ABXShares issued 3728171721997-11-28 close $23.5Monday Dec 1 1997The Wall Street Journal reports in its Monday edition that just when it seemed like it could not get any worse for mutual funds investing in gold company stocks, it has. Reporter Thomas Lauricella says that as the price of gold fell below US$300 an ounce for the first time since 1985, an already poor year for gold funds has turned into a near-disaster. According to Lipper Analytical Services, the average gold fund losst 43.33 per-cent this year as of last Wednesday. In just the week ended November 26, the average gold fund had 7.26 per-cent of its value wiped out. Robert Adler, president of AMG Data, says there is no indication that investors are buying on the dip. He says that investor sentiment in the sector is very negative, and there is no sign of it changing. According to Lipper, gold funds held US$3.3 billion in net assets at October 31, down from US$4.6 billion at the start of the year. The nearly 12-year-old Midas Fund, one of the worst performers, has dropped nearly 60 per-cent in value.
