The only reason Jerry Brown got elected the first time in the 70s was that most people in California had a good impression of his dad Edmund Brown. Then all the fruits and nuts from around the world moved here and put him back in office. He was mayor of Oakland before being elected to this term. Just an aside: Oakland is one of the most dangerous cities in the country ranking 1st in violent robberies and 3rd behind Detroit and St. Louis in overall crime. He really did a great job cleaning that place up. 3. Oakland Population: 395,317 Violent crime rate: 1,683 per 100,000 residents Oakland's high levels of poverty and proximity to drug corridors combine to generate lots of violence. The city across the Bay from San Francisco ranks first nationwide in violent robberies.
