I'm not sure what the myth is. That less competition is bad for the consumer.

The only real issue is what, if anything, should be done about it. My personal view is it is an area where it is necessary to tread lightly and very occasionally, but sometimes intervention makes sense.

I would point to the AT&T breakup, which opened the door to a far better, if more complicated, arrangement for consumers and allowed technologies which otherwise the US would have been excluded from to flourish. It came with some downside, but it would have been hugely counterproductive for AT&T to retain its stranglehold telecom.
