Why is that come as a surprise to you all?
It is not a surprise to me, but it apparently is a surprise to you. When mindmeld said the economy is slowing you said:

This is absolutely not true.

The wingers seem to think we're voting for an economist. This election is about abortion, the Supreme court, sharing the tax burden, protecting the Middle Class, staying out of foreign conflicts & instead protecting American interest here at home.
MM writes like the economy is a physical phenomenon describable with statistics, like it just needs the right doctor with the right medicine. The corporations are sitting on trillions trying to control our political lives. It's close to blackmail. But that's not what this election is about.
Are things so bad here that we have to bring the Gekko in? NOT AT ALL.
Our country was ripped off to the tune of trillions by the banks & wall street. They did it under Bush, and apparently Obama wasn't strong enough to punish the big guys. Our newspapers are on the verge of extinction. Who is gonna hold Murdoch's feet to the fire? So apparently the truth also is becoming irrelevant.
It was all our fault to let it happen,

LOL. Now you agree that the economy is slowing down? Well, hallelujah. You finally absorbed that fact.

All the latest stuff is kinda irrelevant anyway... at some point rates are going to rocket no matter WHO is president. We either see huge slowdown or runaway inflation (if the fed actually has the balls and is so brain dead as to start buying stocks and all the T-Bills with actual $100 bills).

The reason to Vote Obama IMHO is simply that he's much less likely to much around in the ME. He's also much MORE likely to actually cut defense and raise taxes on gazillionaires. In other words... he's not freakin brain dead. But that doen't mean the economy is going to be "saved" or anything... IMHO the "ZUPERHYPECONOMY" pin ball game that's been going on for 15 years tilted in 08 or 9, and the ball has simply taken a while to bounce back and forth while Bernanke and Gubbament "stimulated" it with body english trying to get something to happen as it worked it's way down to the completely dead flippers economists call "fed policy" and "fiscal policy".

Time for the ball to drop and start a new game. There's no way out... unemployment is going to freakin skyrocket again as rates move up unless trade restrictions are put in place with countries paying $1 a day for labour. Seems kinda obvious.
