I think the new iMac form factor is less expensive to make. For one thing they don't have to buy and install an optical drive. Hence more profit.

Given that the new and old machines are pretty similar in other ways, I think MOST consumers would opt for one with an optical drive.

So Apple is making them go away quickly.
