You know what I hate? AAPL down 15 and trying to pick up a slog of options knowing, at least in my mind that it would be rising toward the close. And missing them by $0.05, too stubborn not to raise my bid up by a lousy nickle or so beyond the mid point to ensure that I get them.

*Sigh*

I do not believe that giving away a small number of free subscriptions to early buyers cost MS very much. I was very happy to get it, though. I can stream unlimited music to all my devices for a year now. Sweet.
Of course it didn't cost them much. The point is that Apple doesn't have to resort to those kinds of gimmicks to generate lines.

"psylent, the promotion for the first few buyers - a year of the XBOX music subscription service for free, is sold out where he is at, and probably went out everywhere rather quickly this morning"

This being the Apple thread, I will post my Surface gripes here, and any positive thoughts on your thread :).

Personally, I found it a bit thick. It feels substantially bigger than an iPad. Also, Microsoft has made a few design decisions that do not mesh with how I use my tablet. The kickstand holds the device at near vertical, but I very rarely need my iPad at that angle (usually at 45 deg or even closer to the horizontal). The kickstand is only useful in laptop mode. I had no problem with the screen aspect ratio-- even in portrait mode, it was fine where supported (like a legal sheet of paper). However, I hated the jerky screen rotation in Windows RT-- the screen blacks out and reappears switched. It needs to be much smoother (like it is in Windows Phone 7).

All that said, I love the interface, it's fairly responsive and has a lot of good ideas. The split keyboard (which Apple has since aped for the iPad9, is genius. but regarding Surface as a product, personally, I was much more impressed with the Asus RT tablet at $600, which was way more iPad-like (thinner and sleeker than the Surface). But to be fair, if I got a Surface, I wouldn't get a touch cover anyway, so I am probably not the user Microsoft had in mind.

"a small number of free subscriptions to early buyers" was 100 per store.

How many Microsoft Stores are there?

MS Office full version is at least $299 but the Word/Excel/PowerPoint Student Version is $149.95. It used to be about $30 less, but had Outlook instead of PowerPoint. Now you can get it from the Mac App Store, not at checkout with a Mac. And it's delivered OTA, updated OTA, and is good on ~ 3 devices.
