The Harsh Reality Of Obama's Low Expectations

Economy: President Obama thinks GDP growth of 2% is something to cheer about. Apparently he's counting on four years of lowered expectations so much that now even pathetic economic indicators are celebrated.

The White House was upbeat Friday over the latest GDP number, which was up from the second quarter. They were cheering a few weeks ago, too, when the jobless rate dipped below 8%.

If these reports help Obama politically, it will only be because Americans have been down so long that anything looks up.

Take unemployment. It used to be an unemployment rate of 7.8% was a sign of something terribly wrong.

When Jimmy Carter got trounced in 1980, the jobless rate was 7.5%. And President Bush was hammered by Democrats and the press for a "jobless recovery" after the 2001 recession, even though unemployment had fallen to 4.4% by early 2007.

But after saddling the country with 8%-plus unemployment for a record 41 straight months, Obama says it's time to break out the champagne.

Or take gas prices. When the cost of a gallon of gas hit $3.35 in 2008, it became a major issue in the year's presidential campaign. Sen. John McCain called for a moratorium on the federal gas tax to bring motorists some relief, and Obama talked about all his big energy plans.

Today, gas prices average $3.60 a gallon and have topped $4 in California, and it's hardly even an issue. But since prices have topped $3 a gallon for nearly two years — another new record — Obama hopes everyone will just resign themselves to $60 fill-ups.

And so far this year, GDP growth has averaged less than 1.8%. That's after last year's 1.8% growth. And while the Commerce Department initially thought GDP had climbed 3% in 2010, it now says the economy grew a mere 2.4% that year.

So unless a miracle happens in the fourth quarter, Obama will have presided over three years of sub-3% economic recovery — still another record of low achievement.

Heck, the economy grew faster during several Great Depression years. In fact, from 1934 to 1937, annual GDP growth actually averaged 9.5%. And from 1930 to 2009, annual real growth averaged 3.5% — even counting all the recessions in between.

Here's another way to think about it:

Twenty years ago, then-President George H.W. Bush got pummeled by Bill Clinton and the mainstream press for presiding over what they called a terrible economy.

Clinton's 1992 campaign motto was "It's the economy, stupid," and in one of the debates with Bush he said the country needs a president who "is committed to getting this economy going again."

The same year, the New York Times predicted "voters will judge President Bush harshly because of the unusually weak economic growth during his administration."

Unusually weak?

When the Times wrote that article, the economy was growing at 4%. In fact, quarterly growth rates topped 4% in every quarter that year.

Obama himself predicted when he first got into office that growth this year would be 4.6%. Even this February, he was saying growth would clock in at 2.7%.

Now Obama wants voters to reward him with four more years, despite the fact that growth will come in below even that pathetically low bar.

In a little more than a week, voters will get the chance to tell Obama they still have high expectations for this country, and high standards for its leader.

Jefferson County "Democrat of the Year" convicted in at-risk adult case

Three days before Jefferson County Democrats were scheduled to hand out their Democrat of the Year award, they were warned that the recipient was under investigation for exploiting an elderly woman with physical and mental disabilities.

Now, the party faces the embarrassment of seeing its honored volunteer — Estelle Carson — as a convicted felon.

A Jefferson County jury on Thursday convicted Carson of identity theft and theft from an at-risk person, both felonies, according to Pam Russell, spokeswoman for the district attorney. Carson, 67, is scheduled to be sentenced in December.

The party announced in December that Carson was the recipient but didn't hear from critics until right before the Jan. 8 dinner, said Chris Kennedy, chairman of the Jefferson County Democratic Party.

Cindy Maxwell, who counsels people with disabilities, was one of those critics. She warned party officials that she believed that they were about to give the award to a bad actor, but Maxwell said a party official told her there was nothing they could do unless the woman had been convicted, which she had not.

"I said, 'When she is convicted, which she will be, how do you plan on taking that award from her?' Of course, there was no answer," Maxwell said. "I was appalled, and I'm a Democrat."

Kennedy said the award is given to a volunteer who goes "above and beyond expectations by constantly offering to help." He declined to comment further.

Carson could not be reached for comment.

Maxwell has worked with the 71-year-old victim for a decade, helping her with budgeting and other needs. She alerted authorities about Carson and testified at trial.

Russell said Carson, who met the victim last year, wrote three checks from the woman's account, including one to pay for Carson's cable, Internet and phone when they were about to be canceled.

State Rep. Sue Schafer, D-Wheat Ridge, gasped when she heard the news about Carson, who lives in her district. Schafer said she attended the dinner where Carson received her honor and remembers her being "very excited."

"I'm totally shocked and very sorry," Schafer said. "She has done a lot of good work for the Democratic Party."

Yep. America is in such a huge recovery that Unemployment (U6) was at 14.7% when Obama took office and has improved to 14.7% as of the most recent measurement point.

In the words of so many: With friends like Obama, who needs enemies?
