> It is a toy by comparison.

I remember when I was shopping for my first computer in the 90s?

One salesman called Macs "toys"

I ended up buying a Mac. Very glad I did.

Meanwhile, Apple lets users of their desktop OS wither on the vine, while they devote all resources to their cash cow, the fun mobile devices that make great toys, entertainment devices and e-readers. For they know that when they give the desktop OS the software and hardware upgrades it so badly needs, the raison d'etre of the tablet devices will cease to exist.
What an enormously silly thing to say. The latest desktop OS is a few months old and is fantastic. The entire computer line (apart from the towers) has been upgraded within the past two months.

Besides, how does upgrading the desktop change the value proposition for the iPad? Once again, you're not making sense.

And by the way, when I spoke about the dual-interface issues, I was talking about the PC experience. Using a touch interface with a mouse is cumbersome, just as using a mouse interface with a touch is. I prefer Apple's approach of using interfaces designed especially for the devices they'll be used on.

I'm not saying the Surface is a total disaster. In fact, it looks like a fine product in many ways. I was surprised by the reviews of the keyboard. People don't seem to hate typing on it, as long as it's on a flat surface.

But we'll see how the market responds.

Did the Surface sell out this weekend?

"I received a Microsoft Word document this morning; the notes for Monday morning management meeting, and I can peruse those notes on the touch screen, or edit them with the keyboard and mouse while in the meeting. "

Funny, this is either a canary in the goldmine or a complete outlier, but the notes for my Monday management meeting are no longer being emailed around in Word format, by decree of my CEO, who got mad that he could not annotate the document with his iPad. We now use Onenote for our interoffice communications, which is cross-platform.

Mr. Zax:

Please refer to post 143832. It seems there may not be a very hot movement to 8 and microsoft's tablet.

Plus, I read somewhere, maybe here, that microsoft employees make up most of the lines outside some of its stores

I think I would object to owning one simply based on the image of me going around telling people how great my Surface is, or that my Surface is a productivity tool that is both fun and highly functional, or that everyone who has come in and seen my Surface has been completely blown away, or that there has been a steady stream of people interested in trying my Surface, and that fanboys get depressed after looking at my Surface.

I just can't see myself saying that with a straight face.
