Hi mel,
I know what you are saying. So let me make a distinction. I am NOT in agreement with the Obama and Dem policy of providing subsidized loans for college students, because this has directly lead to a distortion of the pricing model for college education. In other words, it has lead to very cheap loans to anyone who wants to go to college, which has lead to colleges jacking up the prices to unbelievable levels, which has lead to over-indebted kids, who will have trouble paying off those loans over the long run.

That whole model is disastrous. However, what I am for is a model where we find a way to make sure every kid has an opportunity to go to school from 3 years old until college graduation. One idea is a system where we tax the American people to make this happen. Current taxes for current year expenses...not putting deficits and debt on future generations. Beyond that, I don't have much details in a proposed solution. And believe me, I understand the inherent problems with having the government involved in our lives this way.

But to me, education through an advanced degree is table stakes. Look at Australia's recent announcement about how they have a 25 year plan to be competitive. Why doesn't the US have a 25 year plan? Shit. We can barely create a plan for 3 months from now to address the fiscal cliff.

How would you propose to address the need to give all of our kids the best educational opportunities through college? I'm curious to hear what you think. I haven't heard good answers from either party on this one yet.
