Notes:
Contention Bandwidth:A cable modem subscriber with contention bandwidth
will gain access to the network by contending for the time to transmit
along with other cable modem subscribers. Most Web surfing, e-mail, and
FTP transfers require less bandwidth upstream (from the subscriber to
the Internet) than downstream. The transfer of large files or graphic
rich Web pages will download at speeds hundreds of times faster than
conventional telephone modems.
Reservation Bandwidth: During normal use of Armstrong's cable modem
network, subscribers contend for bandwidth, typical to an Ethernet Local
Area Network. As traffic on the network increases and cable modems'
transmission buffers begin to fill with data, the amount of reserve time
on the network increases as the time for contention decreases. Cable
modems allowed to reserve time on the network will ask for and receive
time slots for their use only. They will not contend with other modems
for this bandwidth. Reservation bandwidth is important to the subscriber
who will perform large file transfers from their computer to another
location on the Internet. Video telexing, IP telephony, and Intranet
Services are typical applications that perform best with reservation
bandwidth. It provides low latency across the network for such time
sensitive operations.
