Not trying to be argumentative, but do you have a link for that? Or some other assurance that we should accept that the "rest of the company was fighting for" a "stripped down toy embedded system"?

Cause that would be really interesting........

He's the guy who fought for iPhone having a real OS instead of a stripped down toy embedded system that the rest of the company was fighting for. No Forstall, no App Store, and who knows how big a negative impact that would have had on the iPhone's reception.

Can we acknowledge all of that and simultaneously acknowledge that he was responsible for the most stagnant portion of the iPhone? The two big features of the last two OS releases are notably underwhelming and Apple has made only minor changes to iOS outside of Siri and Maps. They are now in a position of catching up to Windows/Android in terms of various features.

He may have been an absolute genius but his work these last few years has left much to be desired...and all of that is outside of any the personality conflicts that may have been taking place.

and on a sidenote, Google's new voice recognition on their Search app kicks Siri's ass. Maybe it doesnt have the "natural speech" component of Siri, but overall it simply works faster and better in terms of getting the information I need. I just wish I could use it for things other than search.

> crucifying someone > instead of a stripped down toy embedded system

If I remember correctly they had 2 teams developing rival systems for the iPhone.

I believe one was going to be based more closely on OSX while Forestall wanted a new OS and his team won. I may be wrong on that, old man brain and all.

I really have no doubt that Forestall is a talented guy, and a guy who is responsible for good things at Apple. No crucifying here.

However I've thought for sometime that Apple's interface's have deteriorated. In fact I've always thought they could be improved, from way back before OSX. IMHO ease of use is right up there at the top of why people use Macs. They don't really care about fake felt or leather but that stuff does look dated.

I have a fair amount of faith that Ive will do a good job on this. Its not just skeuomorphic design which I think is a lazy way to do design, its the fact that arguments over trivial crap like that detracts from the core of interface design.

:/) okay sorry I could not resist. Really.

No Forstall, no App Store, and who knows how big a negative impact that would have had on the iPhone's reception.
Well I heard that the reception all depends on how you hold the phone...

You guys are crucifying someone extremely talented and capable to avoid dealing with what is (to me) the plain fact that something inside Apple is pretty seriously fucked up.
Nobody has said he wasn't talented. In fact, my very first post after hearing the news used that word. Of course he has contributed a lot to Apple.

Obviously, the fact that the change was made means there was some kind of problem. But it's possible that it's now fixed, and that the new management configuration will work better. I think we should let some time elapse before concluding that the sky has already fallen.

By the way, you (among others) have complained about iOS getting stale, and yet now that Forstall is leaving it sounds like you think he's an irreplaceable genius. Is it possible that he was not working well with others, and that something needed to be done?

Having said all of the above, I will also acknowledge that it is possible that you're right, that the ouster of Forstall is symptomatic of deep, significant problems within Apple. I don't see enough evidence to support that view yet, and a lot of the information one would need to make such a judgement is, I think, either yet to become known, or stuff only those on the inside know.

Nobody doubts he's an incredibly smart guy and his contributions to iOS were invaluable. Unfortunately, you gotta get along with people too. Even if you're Steve Jobs, which Forstall isn't. That said, I find it interesting that you think so highly of the man. I somehow got the impression you thought iOS to be not as good as Android, given your favorable comments about your Galaxy phone. I've also be reading complaints (not by you, but others around the Net) about how iOS is looking tired and lacking in important features vis Android. Apart from Siri and Maps, there were also issues with notifications and reminders which took iOS one or two iterations before it could even compare with Android's implementation, and even then, some people still find it wanting in those areas. As chief of the iOS division, wasn't Forstall responsible for not keeping up with the competition? So, while he deserves a lot of praise and kudos iOS's for success, he also deserves the knocks for its weaknesses.

By my reckoning, almost all the major fuck-ups that we know of seem to be occurring on the software front, the exception being Browett-gate. And as far as I can tell, Apple is dealing with them pretty much head on. I don't see any avoidance or denial there. As for us, we can only speculate at what is really happening internally. Maybe what you see is what you get, and management has righted itself with this reorg. Your guess is as good as mine, and of course only TWT ;-)
