Whether at home or while traveling, I have a long standing habit of liking to walk at night after 10PM or so. It is the best way that I know of getting a good night's sleep. I also get some of my best thinking done then. When I go to a new city, I usually walk but before I do, I always try to ask a few locals about local "crime issues". Regardless of the answer, I still walk, but the answers do affect my choice of foot wear! Accordingly, at my hotel in Beijing, I asked the assistant manager if it was safe to walk in the evening. I will always remember the answer. In excellent English, he answered: " Well the only problem that I've ever heard of a foreigner having in this area was about two years ago. It happened just before (Chinese) New Year which is a time when many workers need cash in order to buy presents for their families. As it happened, a Westerner was walking through the crossing tunnel under the ring road at about 1 AM and someone approached him and stole his wallet. The police caught the thief latter in the morning and he died while being arrested. Everyone around here knows this story and I haven't heard of any problems since then. No, I don't think you'll have any problems." .....and then he smiled. Whether this story was factual or an urban legend, I was reassured and opted for sandals. I also felt that in the story I had received several lessons in Chinese culture, jurisprudence, and social theory__ all of which had an inferential bearing on economics, gold and the eventual trajectory of the dollar. Culture springs to life from values and thoughts. The quality of those values and thoughts is what informs action and it is the sum of the daily actions of millions that at the end of the day determines the fate of the nation....its economy, its culture, and its currency.
