Scott-
Good point. But while I would not want to take anything away from Microsoft's brilliant execution, I think their situation is unique in signficant ways. They had/have a product that was, to an extent, a "natural" monopoly. It's not clear to me that CSCO's effort to lock industry into proprietary standards for computer communications willl be as successful as Microsoft's ability to lock up the Windows/DOS operating system. I wonder if there is an analogy to the VMS//Unix war of 20 years ago, where Unix emerged victorious in part because it was an open standard. In a similar vein, the Wintel platform prevailed over the Apple. I think there is some evidence that industry does not want to be locked into a "deadly embrace" with proprietary standards, and therein may lie CSCO's Achilles heel.

Regards,

Larry

<<I too often considered if there was some natural law that stated, "No one is allowed to keep winning." Seems to be disproven.>>

Isn't Janet Reno trying to write that into law somewhere?
(Microsoft)

And I recall Hillary and Bill getting really mad at the drug companies
because they were making too much money a few years back.
(Nevermind that these drug companies were investing millions of their own dollars developing products to make our lives better).

Achievement and success seem to be the only way to guarantee
yourself some punishment and scrutiny these days.

What a shame. I think I'll invest in some company that specializes in fundraising - no one would ever bother them.

What a shame.

Just an opinion.
