Bloom is saying that a lot of people struggled hard in the past for us to enjoy today the benefits of their efforts. But he sees today's people knowing only the fragments that pop up to the surface. He sees people enjoying the benefits without trying to understand what was necessary to have what we do today. People were killed to defend beliefs that led for us to have freedom today. People do not stop to think about the pain endured to have what we do today. Modern people have pop culture. That prevents them to acquire real culture.
