The (unofficial) WORLD PHONE badge ...

<< The only phones that are pentaband and truly WORLD phones are the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and now Lumia 920... no other phones can wear the WORLD PHONE badge... >>

The original 'worldphone' was the dual-band Bosch World 718 released in 1997 which operated on GSM 900 networks in EMEA and APAC as well as PCS-1900 (GSM-1900) networks in North America. I used a SIM-unlocked 718 World on an Omnipoint subscription (and then Voicestream which became T-mobile USA) as a secondary mobile primarily for overseas travel from 1998 to 2004. Today Qualcomm uses the term 'worldphone' applied to mobile phones utilizing their chipsets that provide voice and data services on CDMA2000 as well as quadband GSM/EDGE and quadband 3GSM (WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+) networks and now on FauxG LTE networks as well.

The majority of smartphones marketed in the US today utilize quadband GSM/3GSM RF and as such can legitimately be termed worldphones since they can be used to provide voice and data services in virtually all counties in the world (although not all mobile wireless networks in those countries) IF the phone is not carrier locked and utilizes a SIM from an overseas network OR IF the issuing carrier has an international roaming agreement with a network operator in that foreign country.

Whether or not there is a Lumia 920 (or 820/810/822) that is capable of pentaband 3GSM (WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+) operation in addition to quadband GSM/EGPRS/EDGE is open to question. Officially none do. The published specs for the base model, the RM-821 global variant of the 920, or the RM-820 AT&T variant, all indicate that they support quadband and not pentaband 3GSM operation. The 920 base version also supports pentaband LTE as does its RM-821 global variant while the RM-820 AT&T variant supports quadband LTE.

All Symbian S^3 (Anna or Belle) models (808 PureView, 801T, 603, 700, 701, 500. as well as older models) support quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and pentaband 3GSM (WCDMA/HSPA) but not FauxG HSPA+ or LTE.

Cheers,
