Nasdaq ends higher in slow post-Thanksgiving trade

Reuters, Friday, November 28, 1997 at 13:23

NEW YORK, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Nasdaq stocks moved higher
Friday in quiet trading on the day after Thanksgiving in a
session that ended three hours earlier than normal.
"None of the portfolio guys are in today, so there's no
activity," one trader said.
The Nasdaq Composite Index unofficially rose 6.05 points to
1600.55, a gain of 0.38 percent. The market closed at 1300 EST
(1800 GMT) rather than its normal 1600 EST closing time.
"The traditional bias is always to the upside on
Thanksgiving Friday. That's as good a reason as any why the
market is up," another trader said.
Another added, "Look at the volume, man. There's nothing
going on, absolutely nothing."
Unofficially, Nasdaq volume was a meager 204,396,572
shares, a Nasdaq official said.
Technology shares in general moved higher, traders said.
Among the most actively traded shares were Intel Corp
(NASDAQ:INTC), up 1 to 77-5/8, and 3Com Corp (NASDAQ:COMS), which rose
1-5/8 to 36-1/4. Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT), the index's
most active issue, rose 13/16 to 33.
Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) lost 1/16 to close at 141-1/2.
