From 1982 to 1989, size of government grew by 294,000. More if you count the military. But, let's just use the federal government numbers.

In 1982, the number went down 36,000 from 1981. 1983 saw an increase of 50,000 though. 1984 another 34,000. 1985 was yet another 54,000. From 1985 through 1989 56,000.

That isn't what you are saying, though.
