Why is Microsoft gouging consumers, particularly given the substandard performance of their hardware?

Both of you have a point.

As a stand alone pad its looking like the surface is pretty wimpy, crippled bloated OS and poor hardware performance.

Its attraction IS the keyboard, that is where it shines.

It's dishonest to claim that the Surface delivers all the benefits you claim for it at the price of $499.
