Yes, politicians generally don't care about you. They care about themselves and getting elected. That's job number one. Job number two is maximizing government revenues so they have more money to buy votes and reward cronies who will in turn reward them.

They are advocates for whatever their client wants. And what they usually want is to be left alone, not harassed and overtaxed. Big powerful government and lobbyists go hand in hand.

If their client wants huge tax loopholes the lobbyist pays the legislator to pass it. Your legislator!! If taxes were low and flat there's no space for loopholes.

If an oil company wants to drill in the grand canyon they get a legislator to pass a bill allowing it. And as often as not the lobbyist writes it. If they want to cut all the trees down in the Sierra they get a legislator to pass it. I

A company can only drill or cut timber where they have purchased the rights from the landowner. You assume businesses are evil creatures nastily running around trying to ruin the world and we need heroid politicians to protect us. The question is who owns the land? If they wish to lease their property they should be allowed to. You know environmentalists were opposed to any oil production in Alaska to fund that state fund you're so fond of. The environmentalists and the oil companies lobbyists both lobbyed for their clients and fortunately for Alaska, the oil side won that time.

Brumer, those legislators are the product of your democracy. They are your representatives. You feel lobbyists are protecting you from yourself?

What if they want to hurt the company I work for and my family depends on because some liberal green wants them to?
