We have control over our own thinking, true, but we also can control what we do and how we cope.

The trick is to make sure we have the financial wherewithal to be independent, to do as we please, to avoid the fate awaiting the bulk of the citizenry.

This entails not saying "I told you so" but to take Jay's example and educate dunderheads.

I wonder how true this is. I remember in junior high school, Both The Fountainhead and Cat's Cradle (Kurt Vonnegut) were making the rounds. Some embraced The Fountainhead, went on to become Young Republicans and many went on to become businessmen of some sort. Others took to Cat's Cradle and became teachers and social workers. (I generalize.)

My point: The die was cast at an early age. We think a lot less than we like to think...

Nice thought you have got there Robin: <While events seem to be hopelessly out of our individual control, there is one area in which we each have almost complete control, ie, the content of our own thinking...
> Are you sure we have?

Even if a majority know it is happening, that won't stop the process: < the democrats will own the collapse which seems almost certain at some point in the next 4 years...(although since all of us seem to see this collapse one wonders if it will ever materialize at all). > Drug addicts, alcoholics [same thing], religious cults, military mania, political ideology, can all go down the same self-destructive path, and do. Applying Godwin's Law, even though the writing was on the wall, Germany cheered and sang Sieg Heil, then marched to doom. In China, the call went out "'It's the Anglos, it's the Anglos! Down with the Anglos" even though the Anglos had kindly provided a lovely education to the leaders [as they did for Robert Mugabe, Idi Amin and any number of other barbarian dictators], not to mention capital, technology and markets. So the British went out and the Japanese came in, which some people in China found was not quite as pleasant as the British Empire. But, saved by the USA, they opted for Mao's Maelstrom and they found out how pleasant Japan's Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere was by comparison.

The USA is not immune to such destruction of Virtuous Victorian Values. Even if people know it's happening, they march along with the mob, singing at the top of their voices. "Hail to the Chief".

NZ has had Obamacare for decades. The death panels are busy and allocation of scarce resources the norm, costs are high, but for the most part, people's immune systems and unchallenging life-styles get them through to a reasonable age, when the things they put into their own mouths over the decades catch up with them. It will probably be a gradual slide, as it has been, with the USA GDP per capita high, but no longer outstanding.

My grandfather in 1936 said "Well, that's the beginning of the end" or words to that effect, when socialism took over and the welfare state began it's long cancerous growth. Since then, hordes have fled and hordes of bludgers have arrived, and bred. There is now a clear majority in favour of more and more government, more and more bludging, free food, free cars, free medical treatment, free schools, free roads, free everything and suffocatocracy via rule books for everything. Everything is forbidden unless it is expressly approved, in writing, after a long kleptocratic permit process and fees paid.
