They believe in a bygone fantasy world where America was pure and great and hard working and self-reliant. They don't bother with details of the sources of American wealth that partially contradict that fantasy.

Its astonishing that Romney and many on the right write off much of working America, i.e. individuals and families who work in manufacturing (gutted though it be) and service industries while thinking that financial manipulators who skim off the top are the real producers in the country. Meanwhile the army of workers in China making all the things we buy is making China a formidable competitor to America on the world scene, and this difference between America and China was and is being facilitated by the Mitts of the USA.

It blows me away to read the ranting on the winger threads on SI who wail about the USA going down the tubes due to Obama being a Communist (despite him being well away from that territory) when the country who will kick our butts in the near future is in fact Communist and has a government which is far more interventionist in their economy than ours ever has been or will be. That is until the nut jobs wake up to find the USA #2 on the planet and in their terror of this affront to American Exceptionalism, they will run out and trample on a lot of freedoms which are good, but which never had anything to do with economic success. Its just that the dumbbunnies never realized what was responsible for economic success and that it isn't ideology, and especially their cherished ideologies.

A nut job escapes his mental institution and drives in the wrong direction in the highway. The radio warns the public to be cautious as a crazy person is driving in the wrong lane. Hearing this, he laments, "just ONE?! They are all driving in the wrong lane!"

Yesterday BBC interviewed somebody from GOP (can't remember his name) and asked him if Romney was the best candidate that GOP had to offer. His answer was an emphatic "yes," followed by an explanation of the rigorous primary process. What you are witnessing in the posts you sited is inability to see this fact. The fact that every other candidate was just too extremist and nutty for the rest of America and that Romney was indeed the best GOP had to offer. Many people have difficulty accepting they are wrong and instead of adapting to the reality, they want the reality to adapt to them...such is the story with most conservatives (and many liberals).

My guess is that GOP will *at most* have one more president in the office over the next 30 years. And that possibility is limited to 2016. The demographic trend is simply against them and 2016 is their last change to take the office for a generation. However, knowing human nature, they are more likely to squander that chance by presenting an even more extreme candidate.
