Thomas, Although the 50day EMA is a good place to place a mental sell stop, I believe that the 200day EMA is MORE significant when a stock is in a definite downtrend.
The *best* shorts are those whose declining 200day EMAs act as a 'roof' to prices.
Also, IMHO, the best time to go long is to buy a stock at or near the *RISING* 200day EMA. Imagine buying DELL at 71 a few days ago!!
