The Discovery Institute is a much different animal, and I'm very surprised you have not heard of them. They are quite influential and very politically active. If you look at their site today (at least when I linked it) much of the home page is election related. Their entire purpose is to inject conservative values in all aspects of American culture, because in their view, that is what has already happen with liberal values, and they seek to correct the imbalance. That is a thing which is very much a Libertarian linked cause, and is at the root of the conservative Think Tank business, as well as a number of very well known private colleges/universities which have sprung up with the express purpose of producing graduates with conservative values including "conservative science" to hopefully enter the public sphere of politics.

I was raised in a very conservative religious background, but in a small off the beaten path denomination which was keenly aware of religious freedom, and its with interest that I've followed how this has evolved over time. My church was very strongly supportive of religious freedom, but took the view that the best way to achieve this was through very strong separation of Church and State. They have run what is probably the most active advocacy for religious liberty in the USA. But places like the DI and indeed much of Evangelical Christians have morphed to the opposite: They want to inject their religious values into government (and into science to for that matter).

Strange world...
