SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 1997--Next Wave Technology today announced that its 70MB/s NW601 -- the world's fastest codec -- is fully compatible with C - Cube 's recently discontinued CL-550/560 codecs.

Next Wave's NW601 represents an easy transition from the C - Cube design, significantly improves performance and image quality, and is offered at a substantially lower price.

"Not only is the Next Wave solution a viable alternative, it's a better solution," said Kirby Kish, Next Wave's director of sales and marketing. "The NW601 offers enhanced image quality, data rates that are more than 16 times faster, at one fourth the cost of the C - Cube codec. In effect, with the Next Wave solution, customers will receive technology that is at least three generations ahead of C - Cube 's discontinued JPEG device. C - Cube customers are enthusiastically embracing the NW601."

In order to ensure a smooth transition, Next Wave is offering complete application notes that describe the upgrade of both hardware and software from the CL-560 to the NW601. Next Wave support, including reference designs available for evaluation purposes and software development, technical manuals, programmers' guides, silicon samples, and direct application support, is in place.

Next Wave continues to develop architectures and advanced integration techniques to improve speed and image quality while reducing costs. "Next Wave is committed to not only service the JPEG market, but to continue to develop high performance solutions that specifically address the wide range of needs of today's digital video customers," said Kish. "Our success is due to being available to our customers, and not only meeting but exceeding their demands."

The NW601 is available in both 30 MB/s and 70 MB/s versions. The 30 MB/s JPEG codec is optimized for PC video capture and editing, video conferencing, digital still cameras, color printers and surveillance cameras. The NW601-30 supports real-time Motion JPEG compression and decompression of CCIR-601, CCIR-656, and 24-bit RGB video data streams. The NW601-70 targets PC video capture and editing, video conferencing, high-resolution color scanners, surveillance cameras color laser printers, and high-speed color multifunction peripheral applications. The NW601-70 supports visually lossless to more than 100:1 real-time Motion JPEG compression/decompression of broadcast-resolution digital video.

The NW601-30 is packaged in a 160-pin PQFP that integrates glueless video and host interfaces, minimizing the need for external devices. It is priced at less than $30.00 in 10,000 unit quantities. The NW601-70 is packaged in a 160-pin MQUAD, and is priced at less than $70.00 in quantities of 10,000 units. Production volumes of both devices are currently available.
