On todays Bloomburgs news U.S. Food and Drug Administration Approves Beef Irradiation

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved irradiation as a safe method to kill harmful
bacteria in the nation's beef supply. Approval of the process for use by U.S. meatpackers comes
after the August recall by Nebraska-based Hudson Foods Inc. of a record 25 million pounds of
hamburger meat, some of it tainted with the potentially deadly E. coli 0517:H7 bacteria. A formal
announcement of the FDA's approval was expected around 9 a.m. EST, said Judy Foulke, an FDA
spokeswoman who confirmed the decision.
