New ideas are very difficult for nearly everyone to understand, let alone accept: <Tradable Citizenship is a hard idea to get across to Americans because once American you are in it for life whereas a Canadian citizen can revoke his citizenship and obligations by filling out and signing a form. >

People live by rule of thumb nearly all the time, because it's impossible to start from first principles for every little action and thought. Slogans and cliches are standard operating procedure to enable quick decisions and action.

Making a change is a major undertaking for most people who mostly learn by rote, adopting handed-down ideology and how-to responses to any situation.

Don't forget Stockholm Syndrome either. People are like chimps with millions of years of tribal, genocidal, territorial, alpha male dominance hierarchy built into their genes. Stepping out of line is not good for one's health. So they enthusiastically become one of the boys. See your local footy game for example.
