"Second, the confession eliminates the opportunity for others (such as folks in the White House) to try to influence his future conduct, including potential statements and/or testimony about Benghazi (his departure from the CIA doesn’t preclude Congress from having him testify)."

That's what occurred to me, it's an intelligent thing to do if being blackmailed.

How about this? Petraeus resigned to remove himself and to eliminate a layer between the Congress and the deciders in the WH. That might work if he was positive more bad stuff would be out during these hearings etc.

This is from the most recent book titled, THE GENERALS: "Petraeus's biggest risk was reaching out to the Sunni insurgents and offering them money to turn sides. He did not clear this move with President Bush. "I don't think it was something that we needed to ask permission for," he would say in an interview, but he probably had realized that the best course was not to put the president in a box, but instead to take action first and seek approval afterward."

FOX reporters said that the CIA people etc. in Benghazi were told to "stand down." Was Petraeus a part of that decision making process? Did he make the decision without consulting the WH similar to the Iraq article above?

It is difficult to understand why he chose to speak out now if this tryst had been going on for a year plus. UNLESS, his wife just found out or was told by someone within the power base or BY THE OTHER WOMAN.

If he freely volunteered the info without any other dictating circumstances he is a fool and not an appropriate man to direct the CIA.

Therefore, I will believe that he was about to be outed.

The WH handed him the resignation letter, "sign or we will be forced to...".

There are a number of possibilities and undoubtedly one or more back stories.
