If this election was "Bizarro 2004", then we need to work on "Bizarro 2006".

I predict Obama will be feeling his oats and tip his hand more than he did previously, when he knew he had to run again. Most of the country still thinks Obama is a Democrat -- you know, in the tradition of Bill Clinton. They are about to find out who he really is.

FDR bungled things for longer than that and is still revered in many quarters. Similar experience has been common here and there around the globe for a long while.

I'm wondering if some isolated and diminishing residual belief in originalist principles gave the US some measure of inoculation. If so, that quality is finally about gone. Faith in the potential of free individuals who govern themselves reasonably well has been replaced.

It sickens me, but I fear that a long slide toward a less prosperous and civil society is inevitable and will generally be accepted simply as the way things are. There'll be squalling and screaming and gnashing of teeth, but the cause of decline will mostly escape unnoticed.
