it was motherboard
My original, the oldest model 15" MBP went though a few of those while in Apple Care, then went to rest with Steve the last time the motherboard died, outside of warranty.

The symptoms were always the same as you described.

In the end, it decided to just shut down once in a while, for no apparent reason, when it felt like it. Nightmare.

That's when it was time to wake up and buy the 13" refurb MBP I have now.
