Libit Continues Push Towards Single-Chip Solution for Cost-Effective Advanced Cable Modems December 2, 1997 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOS ALTOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- LBT 4040 Prototype to Be Demonstrated in CableNet '97 at Western Cable Show Later This Month Libit Signal Processing Ltd. (www.libit.com) today announced it has integrated a media access control layer with the physical layer of its LBT 4030, the first standards-compliant cable modem transceiver chip. A prototype of the new chip, LBT 4040, will be demonstrated for the first time at the Western Cable Show, December 9-12 in Anaheim, Calif. "The LBT 4040, with base-line privacy, will be a highly integrated PHY and MAC reference design and marks our next step toward a single-chip solution for the high volume, mass market," said Jacob Tanz, Libit's vice president of North American sales and marketing. "In addition, the flexibility of Libit's entire product line will enable cable modem equipment manufacturers to choose various levels of feature integration with corresponding differences in cost." Gerry Kaufhold, senior multimedia analyst with In-Stat, a market research firm based in Scottsdale, Ariz., said, "In-Stat expects nearly one million Cable Modems to be shipped worldwide during 1998. Such dramatic growth is a direct result of the MCNS/DOCSIS standard. Libit Signal Processing is leading the way with their LBT 4030, and other MCNS-compliant products." Strong Product Family As proof of the company's commitment to the cable marketplace, Libit has been successful in bringing to market a strong product family. Earlier this year Libit unveiled the LBT 4030, a highly-programmable chip for high-speed, two-way data transfer at the subscriber end of hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) cable networks which includes a complete downstream and upstream physical layer. The Company also plans to announce a set-top component product offering in early 1998. At the upcoming Western Cable Show, the LBT 4040 prototype along with other powerful Libit products can be viewed in CableNet '97. Providing Real Cost Benefits to Cable Modem Manufacturers The LBT 4040 will further demonstrate cost savings and performance advantages through the utilization of Libit's leading-edge technologies in the design, development and manufacture of modem solutions and products for advanced digital communications. Libit is committed to delivering reliable, robust and MCNS-compliant components to cable modem manufacturers. As the industry experiences exponential growth, Libit will continue to provide cable modem components at a low cost to meet the high-volume demands of the industry, bringing the consumer market closer to reality. Advanced Technology The board-level prototype of the LBT 4040 includes the LBT 4030 and MAC FPGAs. The LBT 4040 will integrate the two-way MCNS MAC hardware with the LBT 4030 transceiver along with base-line privacy. A fully functional LBT 4030 prototype received successful results at first and second MCNS (Multimedia Cable Network Systems) Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) prototype equipment testing sessions at CableLabs. This interoperability testing further advances industry-wide interoperability between equipment vendors and cable television system operators.
