I believe that insurance keeps the price for medical procedures artificially high. Where there is no insurance, competition drives the price down.

Politicians whose regressions keep progressing don't want us to know this, but competition works. I personally know an Ophthalmologist who lost a bunch of money on a LASIK center. Soon after he opened, some more people came and opened some more centers, and they got him out of business. I feel bad for the guy, but - as you said - the customer wins.

The so called "first dollar coverage" is absurd. If you had first dollar coverage for your liquor costs - wouldn't you head ASAP to the best restaurant, and focus in on the top shelf?.... :)
