I'm not sure what they expect. The grocery business operates on the thinnest of profit margins.

The Kroger near us now has more automated checkout stations than they have that are manned by actual humans. We're going to see a lot more of this.

Of course, mechanization/computerization is good for the economy in the long run, but in the near/intermediate term, it is going to inflict a lot of pain on those who can least afford it.
