The problem for any Republican candidate is going to be that to get past the primaries you have to be out on the fringe Right. But that won't work in the general election. Romney was the only candidate who could plausibly make that sort of shift because he has done it before.

However the fringe wouldn't let him morph until Obama's crappy first debate. One of the reasons he had such a crappy debate was the Romney he had prepped for wasn't the Romney that showed up. Now Romney the Moderate started his rise in the polls. If he had shape shifted earlier, he might have won. But there wasn't enough time for the electorate to forget Romney the Extremist.
