You are of course correct. The country lost big time. When Republicans stop trying to be "democrat lite" they may start listening to their base. When the GOP establishment embraces the Tea Party patriots rather than being embarrassed to be associated with them, then the GOP will recover. Yes there isa huge barrier of communication to over come. Liberals control the fMSM, schools and most other propaganda tools. Conservatives have to stop hiding and admit that they know liberals are lying. Liberalism / progressivism / socialism has failed everywhere every time it has been tried. The only reason it keeps being tried is a new generation of people see it as their best chance to grab control of the system. Are democrats all little Hitlers? Nobody credible believes that. But quite a few democrats would like that much power. They are willing to lie about their motives to try to grab it.
