The Fire Island wind farm site was chosen after extensive study, and seems to have plenty of wind. The project has been online and generating power for several months. Economic viability depends on how you measure it. The turbines got a federal subsidy, the transmission lines got a state subsidy, and the local utilities were politically strong-armed into buying the power.

There is room on the island to at least double the number of turbines, so I'm waiting to see if they'll be added. The expensive transmission lines from the island to the power grid are a sunk cost, so if other factors are positive then it makes sense to expand the farm to the maximum extent possible. One of the big unknown variables is the future cost of alternate power from natural gas. The local price of natgas is currently high and rising, but ongoing local gas exploration find lower the price.
