Regarding California and shale:

"...my position on california doing almost anything new relative to fossil fuels is they suffer from the tyranny of the majority..."

My opinion is that the oil companies involved there are doing something positive regarding shale development. And unlike the response to your comment "I guess its (shale) just a gift to future generations",I am betting that I'll see shale development in California that's very good for the stocks of oil companies involved. (And hopefully development that's not disruptive to earthquake fault lines or available water supplies)

I have recently been buying and adding to my position in OXY. "More than one-fourth of Oxy’s California production currently is from shales." oxy.com. I also hold positions in HES and CNQ which also have interests in the California Monterey.
