Sr., K, Nestlé sold the baby formula powder and didn't sell contaminated water. But they knew that it was primarily what these people had access to, that boiling was also difficult, and that many of these families were not using the correct amt of powder. Leaving their babies under-nourished in calories and with intestinal illnesses.

Like koan, I have not bought anything that I know of that they make/market since then. I tend to eat quite simply---ingrained by immigrant parents who, as subsistence farmers in their native country, were appalled by what Americans ate. My father became a vegeterian not because of the ethical/political/ reasons but for health reasons when he saw how the animals were housed and treated....

Her feelings about Wonder Bread? Ditto frozen and packaged foods...

I recall begging her to make Potato Buds(!) and she acquiesed a couple of times;)

All this said, even when adjusted for changes in value, their income of those days would not give them the luxury of feeding 5 kids today in a manner they preferred.

And that's what the "Nuns on the Bus" have been trying to make us all aware of. That working poor need food stamps because their wages cannot keep up with rising food prices...
