Cabletron skids to year

In August, company co-founder and chief executive Robert Levine announced he would retire and be replaced by Don Reed, then an executive at NYNEX Corp.

Today, the company said earnings for its third quarter ending in November would likely be in a range of $0.08 to $0.12 per share, well short of First Call's consensus analyst estimate of $0.39 per share.

It said revenues were likely to decline to between $330 million and $340 million from $361 million a year ago.

\000 Cabletron also said it would post a pre-tax fourth quarter

charge of $25 million to $30 million for ''better alignment of its business strategy with its market
focus.''

The charge may include writing off non-core business assets and duplicate facility costs, it said.

Cabletron's share price decline was the sharpest in percentage terms among New York Stock
Exchange listed issues.
