SP500 confirmed the bounce at the 2 second major support level. The decreases volume leave the counter rally vulnerable to being only a short term move. On the plus side the index re-crossed the 200 day SMA to the upside indicating that the major trend change indicated by the technicals is not being confirmed.

Similar comments for the DOW except that the volume today equals the volume on Friday which may be constructive for a potential follow through. On the negative side the DOW remains below the 200 day SMA which means the trend is still down and the major trend change is confirmed unless the index clears the 200 day sma to the upside in the next 2 to 3 days

.

DOW transports counter rallying for the bottom of the channel. The transports remain in a sideways trading pattern.

Despite the counter rally the COMPQ is still in an intermediate down trend. I would not read to much into the counter rally at this point.

If the Russell 2000 can move above the 200 day SMA tomorrow the major trend change signal will be negated. Given the reduced volume today I don't think it has the momentum. I would not pre-judge the move though as this market is very volatile and nothing is really trending as we would see in a more stable economic environment.

If the financials can clear the 50 day SMA tomorrow it will negate the sell signal.

I don't really like the light volume today, but the cross of the 200 day SMA to the upside today indicates it is possible for the sentiment in the sector to shift back to the positive side. Some of it might just be seasonality coming into play as the winter heating season will stablize oil prices. I think I want to see a successful re-test of the 200 day SMA in 2 to 3 days as the counter rally momentum fades.

Gold counter rallying on light volume. I not quite ready to call an end to the negative down trend yet.

Natural gas still trying to set a new high despite the weakness in the E&P companies. The index can track sideways for a while longer before I would be concerned about a negative downside resolution of the consolidation pattern.

In the current market environment the indices are more news driven than driven by underlying technicals, so be aware of the marco news environment. The trading in the energy sector indicates there is at least some normalcy is entering the market as seasonality appears to be at having some effect.
