J O'B,

I can't relate to the Time published returns unless they were seriously out of date even for a print magazine or unless the article is comparing the S&P 500 return to the DJIA return for all 30 stocks.

At fool.com , returns for a variety of Beating the Dow strategies are updated weekly. This is purely mechanical, buys stock at the day's close, and to my knowledge, doesn't include dividends in the calculation.

I include both dividends and commissions because that's what I received or paid. I also have better entry points than closing prices for the day that I entered. Nor was I religious about buying all stocks in a position on the same day. This "toying with the system" has served me well for the stocks that I own but has caused me to miss GM at $45, its spinoff of EDS and any other goodies during the last 2 years.

In any case there are numerous ways to make/lose money in the market. Each to his own, but hopefully through a reasonably complete understanding of the alternatives.

Ian.
