Dealing with insurance up to medicare eligibility is a real problem if you have any net worth. Obamacare may offer some better options for people who can manage their income.

I know of one person I worked with who took a large cash buyout of his pension to start a small business with his wife. During the period between coverages she came down with cancer. A year later his several hundred $K was gone and so was his wife. So when I met him right after this he was working hard in his 60's.

Older people in this economy have it bad but the younger generation have it worse. But if you find yourself out of work in your 50's you better have some real marketable skills. There are many 20 somethings looking for entry level work who wont have the same salary expectations or the same health related issues a 55 year old may have. So needless to say I see plenty of people with low net worth, poor and declining health, and 5-10 years until they are eligible for medicare. Many will be penniless and on Medicaid before they reach medicare.
